People who work in Quincy Center or who occasionally visit won’t be able to park in the Hancock Lot much longer — though the city has come up with some alternatives.
The parking lot at Dennis Ryan Parkway and Revere Road is scheduled to close this summer for construction of a new parking garage.
The lot is used by downtown workers who pay to park monthly, as well as by people who have daytime appointments in Quincy Center or who visit nearby restaurants.
Christopher Cassani, director of the city’s traffic, parking, alarm and lighting department, said an interim parking plan will use lots around Quincy Center, as well as valet service and shuttles from a private firm, Priority Parking of Quincy, as a way to encourage people to continue patronizing downtown businesses.
The city has budgeted $1.2 million for valet and shuttle services, which will come from the city’s downtown improvement financing fund.
Monthly permit holders have already been assigned to other lots, and they will be relocated beginning April 2, Cassani told city councilors on March 5.
Half of the Hancock Lot, which has 250 spaces, will close April 2, and the remaining 125 spaces will be open for two-hour parking until around July 2.
The bulk of the interim parking plan relies on spaces in the Ross and Hannon lots. Employees of Stop & Shop headquarters in Quincy Center will use 120 spaces at the Neighborhood Club of Quincy, Cassani said.
Smaller lots around Quincy Center will be used for monthly permit holders, evening visitors, and construction workers.
The interim plan is to be in place through October 2019, when the garage is scheduled to be finished, Cassani said.
Parking after 5 p.m. will be free in major downtown lots.
Areas around Parkingway and Ross Way will also be re-striped to allow as much on-street parking as possible, according to the plan, which is available at www.quincyma.gov.
