A Roxbury teenager was arrested in Florida last week on allegations that he fatally shot a man in Salem and fled to avoid prosecution, according to law enforcement.

Xavier Collazo, 19, was apprehended by the Jacksonville County Sheriff’s Department Thursday on murder charges stemming from the March 31 afternoon shooting of 27-year-old Benjamin Magee of Salem.

The Essex County District Attorney’s office, which tracked Collazo across the country with the help of State Police detectives and US Deputy Marshals, said Collazo was being held at Florida’s Duval County Jail before his pending transfer to Massachusetts.

In an interview earlier this month, Salem Police Captain Conrad Prosniewski said Magee was probably shot by someone he knew. The Salem Police Department did not respond to requests for additional details on the murder.

Authorities have no timetable on when that transfer will occur, district attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office said in a press release.

“I’m relieved that this individual was located and apprehended without further harm to the public,’’ Blodgett said. “All of the law enforcement agencies involved, both here and in Florida, are to be commended for their good work.’’

Collazo was arrested in the South End last July after Boston police said he ran away from officers before engaging in a violent struggle. Once arrested, police recovered a loaded Ruger .380 caliber handgun from Collazo’s pants pocket, according to a statement at the time.

Collazo was charged in Roxbury District Court with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, the statement said. The outcome of those charges was unclear Saturday.

After rendition, Collazo will face charges of murder, carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a firearm with a defaced serial number, unlicensed possession of ammunition, and unlicensed possession of a firearm, Blodgett’s office said.
