Yankees to interview Beltran

Carlos Beltran capped a 20-year playing career with a World Series title with the Houston Astros earlier this month. According to reports, the 40-year-old Beltran will interview with the Yankees on Wednesday as New York continues its search for a manager. The switch-hitting outfielder and designated hitter, who was the 1999 AL Rookie of the Year with the Royals and went on to hit 435 homers with seven teams, has consistently expressed an interest in managing. Beltran was widely viewed as an unofficial but influential player-coach on several of his recent teams, including this year’s Astros.

Sandoval on 2018 Sox calendar

Former Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval, released on July 19, is pictured on the April page of the team’s 2018 calendar. The free agent bust appears because he was still Boston property in May, which was the deadline for the calendar design to be submitted to Turner Licensing . . . Doug Fister and the Rangers finalized a $4 million deal. Fister, who started 15 games for the Red Sox in 2017, going 5-9 with a 4.88 ERA, will get $3.5 million for 2018 and there is a $4.5 million team option for 2019.

Clippers’ Griffin out 2 months

The already decimated Los Angeles Clippers took another hit with Blake Griffin out up to eight weeks with a sprained left knee. The team said that an MRI revealed a medial collateral ligament sprain, but there is no other structural damage to the knee. Griffin was hurt in Monday’s win while going for a loose ball . . . Ex-NBA player Ben Gordon was arrested on suspicion of robbery in Los Angeles for allegedly punching and pulling a knife on an apartment manager. A police spokesman said Gordon went to a building Saturday where he rented two apartments and demanded his security deposit. Chicago’s third overall pick in 2004 out UConn punched the manager in the face and walked away with money, returned with a knife to demand the rest, left, and was arrested when he returned a third time.

Lonergan, Watts propel BC

Caitrin Lonergan had a hat trick and two assists, Daryl Watts added two goals and an assist, and Boston College (12-1-2, 6-0-2 Hockey East) picked up a 7-3 win over Northeastern (9-8-2, 5-5-1) in women’s hockey at Conte Forum . . . Victoria Bach (two goals, three assists), Rebecca Leslie (two goals, two assists), and Jesse Compher (two goals) provided the offense as BU (6-7-2) scored three unanswered goals in the third period to take a 6-4 nonleague win over Brown (1-10-0) at Walter Brown Arena . . . Johnny Austin had a goal and two assists and UConn (6-10-2, 4-6-1 Hockey East) skated away with a 4-1 win over No. 12 Northeastern (7-5-1, 5-3-0) in men’s hockey at Hartford.

Edwards up for Arizona State job

According to multiple reports, former NFL head coach Herm Edwards will interview in the coming days for the head coaching job at Arizona State. The ex-NFL cornerback last coached in 2008, leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a 2-14 record. In eight seasons with the New York Jets (2001-2005) and Chiefs (2006-08), he was 54-74. Edwards, 65, last coached in college as an assistant at San Jose State from 1987-89.

Penguins place Murray on IR

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury. Coach Mike Sullivan said Murray is “week to week’’ after leaving Monday night's 5-4 overtime win over Philadelphia following a collision with Flyers forward Jakub Voracek . . . Bud Moore, who was the oldest living member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, has died. He was 92. NASCAR announced the death of Moore, born Walter Moore Jr., on Tuesday. Obituary, B9 . . . The Russian track and field federation says sprinter Yulia Gushchina and long jumper Anna Nazarova have been disqualified from the Olympics for doping after their samples from the 2012 Olympics were retested.
