CHELMSFORD — A police chase that began in Tyngsborough Saturday night ended with a police-involved shooting in Chelmsford, State Police said.

The shooting occurred at about 9 p.m. in the area of 55 Graniteville Road, said David Procopio, a State Police spokesman.

“There was a pursuit of the suspect prior to the shooting,’’ Procopio said in an e-mail.

State Police were not involved in the shooting but sent investigators, crime scene technicians, and ballistics specialists to investigate, Procopio said.

Procopio said he did not know which departments were involved in the pursuit “or the reason they tried to stop the suspect initially,’’ he said.

No information was available on the suspect or the suspect’s condition Saturday night.

Tyngsborough Police would not comment on the incident. Chelmsford police referred questions to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office.

Liz Vlock, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office, said she was looking into the matter Saturday night. She declined further comment.

The incident took place near 55 Graniteville Road, which is the location of Sully’s Ice Cream Stand.

A person who answered the phone there Saturday night declined to comment.

One nearby resident who identified himself only as Anthony said he was surprised to see police cruisers flying by his home around 8 p.m.

“The only thing that I know is that we were home, and multiple cop cars had gone by,’’ said the man, who lives three doors away from the shop.

He said he noticed a car that had front-end damage in front of the stand.

“There were probably about 20-30 people at the ice cream stand’’ at the time, he said.

“A female cop was yelling at somebody to leave somebody alone,’’ he said, before police told spectators to leave.

A MedFlight helicopter had landed next to his house, and at 10:45 p.m., there were at least seven police cruisers lined up from his house to the ice cream stand, he said.
