Austin Burton not passing on Florida

A number of Newton South students rented limousines for transportation to the prom on Friday night.

But Austin Burton flew in from his new home away from home in Florida to make good on his promise to his girlfriend that he would take her to the prom.

One of the state’s top quarterbacks, Burton has decided to play his senior season at West Orange High School in Winter Haven, Fla.

Burton, the son of WBZ-TV sports anchor Steve Burton, has been enrolled at West Orange High for three weeks. He is living with his uncle, Phil Burton, a motivational speaker who resides in the area.

Last fall, the 6-foot-4-inch, 215-pound Burton threw for 3,299 yards and 34 touchdown passes in directing Newton South to an 8-3 season. He also finished second out of 60 players from the Class of 2017 at the Elite 11 Regionals, a competition for high school quarterbacks, held in Florham Park, N.J.

“Austin loves challenges,’’ said his father, who played college football at Northwestern. “This was a new one he wanted to take on. It was more about becoming a better person and a better man.’’

The younger Burton’s decision to transfer came together quickly after he made a visit to West Orange High.

“It all happened pretty fast,’’ said Steve Burton. “It was more of a family decision. My brother Phil lives down there and he wanted to live there and spend time with him. He also wanted to see what it would be like to play on a higher level.’’

With Auburn recruit Woody Barrett under center last fall, West Orange finished 12-2, advancing to the Division 8A semifinals before losing to Osceola, 35-14.

After his visit, Austin Burton bumped into Darren Flutie, the offensive coordinator at Newton South, at the Orlando Airport and told him of his decision.

Much to Burton’s surprise, Flutie was on board.

“It was hard for Austin to leave the guys,’’ said the elder Burton. “He has so many friends here. They decorated our house and gave him a sending-off party.

“He still has to earn the job. But he is looking forward to the challenge of taking his game to the next level.’’
