WASHINGTON — The Senate has confirmed General Joseph Dunford’s nomination for a second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
By voice vote on Wednesday, the Senate backed the combat-hardened commander, who’s received high marks from Republicans and Democrats. He completes his first term Sept. 30.
President Trump in May nominated Dunford to serve a second two-year term as chairman. President Barack Obama had tapped Dunford for the job. He took over as chairman on Oct. 1, 2015.
Dunford spent his boyhood in South Boston and his teenage years in Quincy. He is a graduate of Boston College High School and the son of a retired Boston deputy police superintendent.
The oldest of six boys, Dunford graduated from Saint Michael’s College in Vermont. He has master’s degrees from Georgetown University and the Fletcher School at Tufts University.
