Westwood keeps up winning ways

GEORGETOWN — On a day defined by wind, cold, and a daunting golf course at Black Swan Country Club, Westwood continued its recent dominance by winning the MIAA Division 2 championship for its third state title in the past six years.

Westwood finished with a score of 312, edging runner-up North Andover (314). Senior Will Frodigh shot a 2-over-par 74 for the Wolverines, following the path of his brother Patrick, who helped Westwood to state titles in 2011 and 2012.

“[It feels] great, especially since my brother did it twice,’’ Frodigh said. “I’m also a senior, too, so it’s good to go out on top.’’

Westwood had two other players come in under 80. After a season of change, Monday’s result was a nice underscore on a memorable year.

“It’s tremendous,’’ Westwood coach Peter Hochman said. “From the new additions to Hannah Blonder being the first female in Westwood to play on the team, to everybody else just coming in, stepping it up, and playing the best they can, and it’s come full fruition right here as we win the state championship.’’

The individual leader was Catholic Memorial junior Andrew O’Leary, the Knights’ lone representative and the only player in the field to break par at 71.

“It felt good to be here,’’ O’Leary said. “I came in second at sectionals, so I was looking to step up my game a little bit and get the win here.’’

Frodigh finished in a three-way tie for runner-up with Duxbury’s Alex Jamieson and last year’s champion, Bishop Feehan’s Davis Chatfield.

Monday’s match felt different to O’Leary. On top of playing 18 holes instead of the typical nine in high school competition, O’Leary didn’t have the support of his teammates on the course.

“It’s not as fun without the team by your side, but I try not to let it faze me,’’ he said.

Things did not look promising for O’Leary from the onset, however. He was 3 over through his first eight holes, but he came through on the back nine, shooting 4 under on his final 10 holes.

“It was a little shaky [at first] . . . so once I settled down I felt pretty comfortable out there,’’ he said. “I was just trying to focus on my next shot and make some birdies, because I knew that was the only way I was going to win.’’
