N.E. Aquarium construction on Central Wharf. (Joseph Runci/staff)

Oct. 11, 1966: The cornerstone of the $4.3 million New England Aquarium is laid in a waterfront ceremony. Among the curious treasures buried inside: a pair of scissors used by Mayor John Collins to cut the ribbon at the Playboy Club, a brick from the Old Howard Theater, and a package of topsoil from the construction of the Boston Common Garage.
