A 15-year-old Tewksbury boy is dead and an 18-year-old from the same town has been charged with throwing him headfirst onto a concrete floor during a weekend party in Lowell, authorities said.
The victim was among a group of teenagers drinking alcohol during the party in a Boylston Street residence Friday night, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan’s office.
At some point, the 15-year-old boy bumped into 18-year-old Joseph Zagrella, who allegedly responded by picking up the younger teenager and throwing him headfirst, prosecutors allege.
The 15-year-old suffered a traumatic brain injury and was first rushed to Lowell General Hospital and then later transferred to Tufts Medical Center in Boston, where he was pronounced dead Monday. An autopsy will be performed by the state medical examiner’s office.
Ryan’s office said it would not release the victim’s name because he is a juvenile, and also asked the Lowell District Court to hide the name of the victim in any court papers.
Christopher Malone, superintendent of Tewksbury schools, said grief counselors, guidance counselors, and a school psychologist are being made available to students.
“Tewksbury Public Schools was sad to learn this morning that one of our high school students passed away as a result of events that took place over the weekend,’’ Malone said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with this student’s family, and know that as a school community, we will support them. As always our focus is to support our students during this difficult time.’’
Zagrella appeared in Lowell District Court Monday where Judge Thomas Brennan set bail at $10,000 cash and ordered Zagrella to stay in his home 24 hours a day and wear a GPS monitoring bracelet if he posts bail, prosecutors said.
He was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, but could face additional charges as the investigation continues, prosecutors said.
