Ferri fights through pneumonia, opponent to win title

PROVIDENCE — Two weeks ago, Shawsheen’s Jake Ferri didn’t know if he’d be able to wrestle at States. Now, Ferri can call himself a New England champion.

Ferri won the Division 1 championship at 106 pounds two weeks ago, after being diagnosed with pneumonia before the tournament. Last weekend, he won an All-State championship, earning himself a spot in the New England High School Wrestling Championships.

Ferri didn’t let the illness keep him from his chance at a New England title, wrestling in the tournament after just one day of practice, and fighting through to win, 8-5, against Cody Craig of Skowhegan (Maine).

“I still had fluid in my lungs, still could barely breathe,’’ Ferri said. “That’s amazing, that’s what I’ve working hard for so long for.’’

Shawsheen coach Mark Donovan said that Ferri was diagnosed with a double ear infection as well as pneumonia, but it didn’t seem to affect the mental side of his game.

“Jake is second to none on work ethic and conditioning,’’ Donovan said. “He believes in himself and he earned this tonight.’’

Donovan said Ferri’s mentality and ability to push himself helped him win his first New England championship.

“Jake is that type of athlete that he works extremely hard when no one’s watching,’’ Donovan said. “He doesn’t need to be patted on the back.’’

Ferri is the second New England champion in the Billerica vocational school’s history, with their first title coming back in 2010.

Ferri said he wanted to stick to the basics in his finals match.

“I didn’t have much of a solid game plan,’’ Ferri said. “I didn’t really scout this kid that much, I was just going to go out there and wrestle.’’

Ferri said he doesn’t like to set goals for himself, but there was one thing on his mind when he stepped off the mat after his win.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet but I’m not done yet,’’ Ferri said. “I’m going to get healthy and get in the best shape of my life and going to go win a national title in a few weeks.’’

Another champion out of Massachusetts was Eric Reyes of Dedham, who pinned Max Odell of South Windsor (Conn.) in his finals match to clinch his second New England title. Reyes survived an overtime bout with Joe Accousti of Newtown (Conn.), defeating him, 5-4, to advance to the finals. From there, Reyes faced Odell, who came into the tournament as the Connecticut All-State champion.

“[Odell]’s been in and out of the national rankings, and there was a lot of talk that he was going to beat me,’’ Reyes said. “I just proved everyone wrong tonight.’’

Reyes, a senior, also won a New England championship his sophomore year, and admitted ending his career with a second win was a bit sweeter.

“It feels good,’’ Reyes said. “It’s been a while, but it’s about time I got it back.’’

Massachusetts also had six runner-ups, including Chelmsford’s Davey Goodall.

Chelmsford finished eighth in the team scoring, the top Massachusetts team in the tournament.

Goodall ended his senior season with a second place finish in the tournament, after winning a Division 1 championship at 152 pounds and placing second in the All-State tournament last weekend.

Chelmsford coach Bruce Rich said, despite the ending, Goodall is one of the best he’s ever seen when it comes to mental strength.

“He’s a great kid and a really committed athlete,’’ Rich said. “He sets a great example for the rest of the kids in our program.’’
