It took four innings for the two-time defending state champion Braintree baseball team to shake off the rust since winning the Super 8 last summer, but the Wamps overcame Framingham, 7-4, in their home opener Tuesday to prove that they still have their eyes on their third straight state championship.
Framingham got ahead early thanks to the bat of junior Jarrod Marifiote. The Flyers first baseman launched a solo home run in the first inning, and drove in two more runs on a double to deep center in the second. After the second inning, Braintree pulled senior starter Kyle Gray in favor of sophomore righthander John Tellier, and tried to regroup.
“First-game jitters,’’ said Braintree coach Bill O’Connell of his team’s start. “This shows some of our young guys have poise, they hung tough.’’
The game shifted in Braintree’s favor in the fourth, and from there the Wamps were in complete control. In the top half of the inning, Tellier struck out Marifiote with two men on base to end the inning, and the Wamps’ bats started clicking in the bottom half.
Senior third baseman Brendan Quigley got Braintree on the board with a two-run double, and senior second baseman Brian Carney knotted the game at three with a run-scoring single. Braintree took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when senior Cole Flannery knocked in a run with a double, but Framingham tied it up in sixth, 4-4.
Senior Jared Brockway drove in the game-tying run, but Braintree broke the game open in the bottom of the frame.
The Wamps tallied three runs on three hits: A sacrifice fly from senior Jack Andrews, and a two-RBI double from senior first baseman Joe Vanelli.
Leading, 7-4, in the seventh, Tellier retired the side to secure the comeback victory.
“We haven’t had much time on the field,’’ O’Connell said. “The hitters got one full time around the lineup, and then I think they felt a little more comfortable.’’
With the first game under his belt, O’Connell kept a level head looking forward.
“One game at a time,’’ he said. “The Bay State League is a grind, got to just survive every day.’’
Lynnfield 8, Triton 3 — Senior Justin Juliano had six hits for the Pioneers (2-)0) and went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Medfield 5, Hopkinton 4 — The Warriors (2-1) held on behind strong play from senior Chris McGrory, who went 2 for 2 with a two-run home run and pitched six innings for the win.
West Bridgewater 12, Holbrook 0 — In a 71-pitch gem, sophomore righty CJ Dunn fired a six-inning no-hitter, striking out 13 of the 19 hitters as the Wildcats opened the season. Dunn also collected three hits and scored two runs, while senior Joe Pereira was 4 for 5 with a pair of triples.
Mashpee 11, Norwell 4 — Senior third baseman Nick Carpenter went 3 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs for the Falcons (4-0).
Stoneham 2, Winchester 1 — Junior Joey Carroll doubled home the winning run in the sixth inning for the Spartans (1-0). Senior captain Brendan Dudman threw a four-hitter, striking out 11 and walking two.
O'Bryant 11, Snowden 2 — Senior Yeralson Baez knocked a two-run home run to lead the Tigers (1-1).
Westwood 7, Bellingham 4 — Sophomore reliever Ryan Shea earned his first varsity win, tossing 2⅓ innings, allowing no runs with a walk and a strikeout for the Wolverines (2-0).
King Philip 9, Canton 0 — Junior Jeremy Rhines pitched a complete game, striking out nine and surrendering three hits for the Warriors (4-0).
Abington 12, Randolph 1 — Senior Evan Fanara had two hits and two runs for the Green Wave (1-1).
Lexington 14, Concord-Carlisle 5 — Sophomore Madison Bina pitched three scoreless innings in relief for his first varsity win for the Minutemen (1-1).
North Andover 6, Lawrence 4 — Sophomore Sebastian Keane delivered three innings of shutout relief for the Knights in their season opener.
Central Catholic 4, Chelmsford 2 — Junior lefthander Steven Hajjar struck out 13 batters in 5⅓ innings of work and also launched a home run to lead the Raiders.
Brookline 10, Weymouth 3 — With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, junior Jack Roche hit a base-clearing two-out double to put the Warriors (2-1) ahead for good.
Norton 6, Dover-Sherborn 5 — Senior outfielder Jay Morris provided the go-ahead RBI for the Lancers (3-1).
Lincoln-Sudbury 6, Westford 3 — Senior Justin Vandervelden pitched five innings and gave up three runs, all unearned, for the Warriors (1-0).
Belmont 3, Melrose 2 — The Marauders opened the season with a walk-off victory, courtesy of junior Dennis Crowley’s double off the wall to seal the deal.
SoftballMethuen 12, Masconomet 0 — Senior captain Samantha Ferraro went 3 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored for the Rangers (2-0).
Sacred Heart 6, Bishop Connolly 0 — Junior pitcher Jill Blake recorded 17 strikeouts while allowing just four hits in her shutout performance for the Saints (3-1).
Norwell 12, Mashpee 4 — Sophomore pitcher Chloe Hohmann pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts for the Clippers (2-1).
Medford 14, Salem 0 — Sam Melanson pitched a five-hitter, and went 4 for 4 with a home run for the Mustangs (1-1).
Hopkinton 13, Medfield 0 — Senior Heather Holly fired a five-inning one-hitter, striking out eight, and also blasted a three-run homer for the visiting Hillers (2-0).
Arlington 13, Arlington Catholic 3 — Senior Jennifer Toomey was 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs for the Spy Ponders (1-0).
Bishop Fenwick 7, Shawsheen 2 — Junior Natalie Medros scattered five hits while striking out five and sophomore catcher Tessa Palermo pounded a two-run homer for Fenwick (2-0).
Stoneham 11, Winchester 1 — Junior first baseman Leah Sacco capped off a six-run fourth inning with a two-run homer to pace the Spartans (2-0). Freshman catcher Vanessa Bryan chipped in with three singles.
Case 6, Wareham 2 — Senior Julia McLintock hit a two-run home run and junior Kylie Leconte finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs to lead the Cardinals (1-1).
Chelmsford 11, Central Catholic 7 — Senior Captain Meg Dugas had five strikeouts and went 3 for 4 at the plate for the Lions.
Rockland 10, Carver 3 — Junior center fielder Sydney McKenna went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Bulldogs (1-1). Left fielder Shannon Murphy added a home run and three RBIs.
Bishop Stang 14, New Bedford 0— Junior Casey Thomas tossed a four-hitter and was 3 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs for the Spartans (1-1).
Silver Lake 4, Plymouth South 2 — Caroline Videtto (3 for 4), Amanda Harris (2 for 3 with a triple), and Kelly Danahy (2 for 4) led the Lakers (3-0). Jill Richards pitched a complete game, striking out eight, surrendering four hits, and walking one.
Norton 14, Acton-Boxborough 1 — Junior Kelly Nelson struck out 13 in six innings of work, giving up just one hit and one walk to lead the Lancers (4-0). Sophomore catcher Nicole Grainger went 3 for 3 with a double and six RBIs.

Braintree 10, Norwood 7 — Senior Connor Hume netted three goals, including the winner to lift the Wamps (1-1).

Norwell 8, Westwood 7 — In a matchup of defending state champions, the Division 2 Clippers (4-0) seized the lead on Murphy McDonough’s goal with two minutes left and then held on for the nonleague win over the Wolverines (2-2) in Norwell. Westwood appeared to score the tying goal with 23 seconds left on a goal by captain Haley Connaughton, but she was whistled for a crease violation, negating the goal.
Triton 15, North Reading 8 — Senior captain Skylar Lewis scored six goals on her 18th birthday for the Vikings.
Concord-Carlisle 12, Westford 6 — Trailing, 5-1, with 10 minutes left in the first half, the Patriots (4-0) unleashed an 11-1 blitz, with freshman Fallon Vaughn scoring three goals.
Amelia Slade made six saves.
Silver Lake 9, Hanover 7 — Sophomore Ann Champan had five goals for the Lakers (3-1).
Belmont 15, Stoneham 8 — Senior AnnMarie Habelow and freshman Caroline Findley netted four goals apiece, junior Erin Haverty scored three, and senior Ciara Murphy made 12 saves to lift the Marauders (1-1).

Quabbin 28, Auburn 26 — Marissa Amidio shot 11-over 46 to help the visiting Panthers (2-0) edge the Rockets (0-1) at Pakachoag.
Westborough 50, Holy Name 4 — Kate Walker shot 10-over 46 to push the host Rangers (1-0) past the Naps (0-1) at Westboro CC.
