Berger seeks first win
Associated Press

Daniel Berger shot a 1-under-par 69 on a hot, sticky Saturday at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, giving him a three-stroke lead over Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, and D.A. Points.

‘‘If it was Tiger Woods behind me, I would have the same mentality,’’ Berger said. ‘‘It doesn’t matter. It’s golf. The golf course doesn’t know who is playing it, so I'm just going to go out there and be aggressive and have some fun, and that’s all I can do.’’

Berger, the 2014-15 rookie of the year who had led a round on tour only once before this event back in 2014, now has led consecutive rounds as he looks for his first PGA Tour victory. Berger had four birdies, a bogey, and a double bogey to reach 10-under 200.

Mickelson (68), Stricker (66), and Points (64) were 7 under. Seung-yul Noh (67), Colt Knost (67), and Brooks Koepka (69) were 6 under.

With so many experienced players and big names chasing him on a day where the temperature felt close to 100 degrees, Berger hit 13 of 18 greens by playing conservatively. He finished Saturday with the same three-stroke lead he had after the second round.

The Florida native kept his three-stroke lead with a birdie on No. 3. After a bogey on No. 5, Berger came right back with a birdie before running into trouble on the par-3 14th. He hit his tee shot into the water in front and two-putted from 16 feet for double bogey trimming his lead down to a stroke.

Mickelson, who had strung together seven straight pars of his own, birdied the par-5 16th to tie Berger atop the leaderboard at 8 under.

Berger took the lead back to himself by taking advantage of the par-5 at No. 16. He hit his approach onto the fringe of the long green and two-putted from 33 feet for birdie. Berger then pushed his lead back to three strokes with his second straight birdie. After putting his approach into the rough beside the green, Berger chipped in from 26 feet to go back to 10 under.

Mickelson hit his third shot 22 feet past the hole on the par-4 17th. He missed the par putt just right and wound up with his first bogey in 22 holes. Mickelson hit his tee shot on No. 18 into a fairway bunker and had to roll in an 18-footer to save par.

Stricker, 49, hasn’t won since the 2012 Hyundai Tournament of Champions, but he tied for seventh at the Valspar Championship in March even as captain of the U.S. team for the 2017 Presidents Cup. Stricker had a four-birdie, bogey-free day to keep close to Berger.

LPGA — Top-ranked Lydia Ko, who is seeking her third straight major title, shot a 1-under 70 for a one-shot lead over Brittany Lincicome and Gerina Piller heading into the final round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in Sammamish, Wash.

‘‘I can’t control what the other girls are doing,’’ the 19-year-old Ko said. ‘‘So [I'll] just try my best out there. We've still got a long 18 holes to go.’’

Ko won the Evian Championship in September in France for her first major title and took the ANA Inspiration in April in California, giving her a chance to become the fifth player in tour history to win three straight majors.

‘‘It’s really cool to, obviously, have my name in those records among those amazing players. And I think that’s the really cool thing about it,’’ Ko said. ‘‘But when I'm out there I'm not thinking so much about records and what could happen.’’

Ariya Jutanugarn, the winner of her last three tournaments, was in the group at even par. Jutanugarn got back into contention with a 68.

Amy Yang also was even after the lowest round of the week, a 66. Yang went out in 32 and was 6 under for her round after a birdie at No. 15, before dropping a shot on the 16th.

Champions — Bernhard Langer put himself in position to win the Constellation Senior Players Championship for the third straight year with a 1-under 69 in windy conditions at Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pa.

The 58-year-old German star, who won this event in 2014 in Pittsburgh and last year at Belmont (Mass.) Country Club, took a three-shot lead over Jay Don Blake.

After playing the first 11 holes in 2 over with two birdies and four bogeys, Langer birdied the par-4 12th to get back to even par for the tournament. He added birdies on the par-5 15th and par-3 16th and closed with two pars on the A.W. Tillinghast-designed Wissahickon Course.

He won the Regions Tradition last month in Alabama for his sixth senior major and 27th tour victory.

Blake birdied the par-4 18th for a 71. Jeff Sluman (70), Woody Austin (71), Wes Short Jr. (72), Bart Bryant (72) and Brandt Jobe (74) were tied for third at 2 over. Bryant birdied the 18th after dropping four strokes in a late four-hole stretch with a double bogey and two bogeys.

Vijay Singh was tied for 31st at 8 over. He followed rounds of 69 and 74 with a 75.

John Daly had a 70 to move into a tie for 59th at 12 over. He opened with two 76s.

European — Zander Lombard had a triple bogey to squander an early three-stroke lead, but still managed to lead Wu Ashun by one after the third round of the Lyoness Open in Austria.

Lombard had four birdies before needing seven shots following a mishit on the par-4 ninth. He carded a 68 to go 11-under for the tournament, while Wu had a 7-under 65.

Lombard is seeking his maiden European Tour title, five months after finishing runner-up to fellow South African Haydn Porteous at the Joburg Open.

Gregory Bourdy of France, who shared the overnight lead with Lombard, went 9-under to share third with Adrian Otaegui of Spain. Former champion Joost Luiten of the Netherlands was one stroke further back in fifth.
