American soldier dies fighting rebels

MOGADISHU — A US Special Operations soldier was killed and four others wounded in an attack in southwestern Somalia against fighters for the Islamic extremist group al-Shabab, US military officials said. The Friday attack in Jubaland may put renewed scrutiny on America’s counterterror operations in Africa. The four wounded soldiers were treated by the US Embassy medical team in Kenya. (AP)

SAN SALVADOR — Prosecutors in El Salvador have ordered the arrests of former President Mauricio Funes and 30 members of his inner circle on a range of corruption charges for allegedly siphoning $351 million from public coffers.
