NEWTON — The suspect charged with stabbing a 79-year-old man who accidentally bumped into him in a supermarket Monday had recently been hospitalized for psychiatric issues, according to a police report filed in Newton District Court.
Witnesses told police that the victim had accidentally pushed his shopping cart into Matthew Muradov, 23, before Muradov chased the victim down and stabbed him twice with a knife, the report said.
Muradov then left the store and got into a car in the parking lot, where he was arrested by Newton police. On Tuesday, Muradov was arraigned on charges of armed assault to murder on a person over the age of 65 and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person over the age of 65.
Muradov did not appear in court, and a district court judge ordered him held without bail and to undergo a mental health evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital. A status hearing was scheduled for April 17.
The violent encounter occurred just before 2 p.m. Monday at the Star Market at 2040 Commonwealth Ave. in Newton, according to police.
Muradov’s father, Stepan Muradov, told police that his son lives at a group home in Newton and that he had spent four weeks at Newton-Wellesley Hospital for treatment of “psych’’ issues “until his insurance ran out two days ago’’ and he was released.
Stepan Muradov told police that he picked up his son at the group home Monday to visit his mother and they stopped at Star Market. The father told police he was in the checkout line when he saw his son leave the store quickly, and when he got to the car and asked what happened, his son replied: “Something stupid happened.’’
Witnesses told police that just prior to the stabbing Muradov and the 79-year-old victim had exchanged words, according to the police report. One witness told police that she heard Muradov yell, “Get away from me,’’ and she saw the victim walk away when Muradov suddenly ran at him “full tilt’’ and “jumped up and stabbed him in the back full force.’’
The victim was taken to Newton-Wellesley Hospital for treatment of two superficial stab wounds and was released later that day, according to police.
According to documents filed in court, Muradov was a former Star Market employee. The police report states that he was employed there from 2014 to 2016 but was on “special leave’’ for most of the time, and was ultimately terminated when he failed to return from leave.
