Baby’s delivery a holiday surprise

EMTs helped a Brockton mother deliver a “Christmas surprise’’ after she went into early labor Monday morning, Brewster Ambulance Service said.

Brockton Fire and Brewster Ambulance paramedics responded to a Crowell Street residence after the 29-year-old mother went into early labor at about 9:30 a.m., officials said.

“She woke up in labor,’’ said Johnathon Bobbitt-Miller, paramedic and shift commander for Brewster Ambulance. “Her husband, the child’s father, was going to go to the hospital, but due to the weather conditions decided to call 911.’’

The mother of four wasn’t expecting to have the baby until early January, Bobbitt-Miller said. When crews arrived the baby girl had already been delivered.

The Brockton fire dispatcher helped coach the family on after-delivery care until paramedics arrived, Bobbitt-Miller said. Crews cut the umbilical cord and wrapped the baby in blankets before taking her to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton.

The unexpected delivery was extra special for the emergency responders who must work on Christmas day instead of spending time with their families, Bobbitt-Miller said.

“We often get very tragic cases,’’ Bobbitt-Miller said. “For that crew to be able to have a happy story today, and be able to welcome a new baby on Christmas Day, is pretty remarkable.’’
