THE BUILT-INS

Designer Andra Birkerts worked with architect Adolfo Perez to design the rift-sawn oak-veneer built-ins and snakeskin-vinyl-clad island, fabricated by Herrick & White of Cumberland, R.I., in the dressing room of this Chestnut Hill home. “The island is especially useful for frequent travelers who like to lay out clothes when packing,’’ Birkerts said. The island’s built-in tray catches coins, earrings, and the like. The pullout compartment in front is a hamper.

THE BANQUETTE

Upholstered in embroidered velvet by Zinc Textile, this piece is a perfect perch for slipping off shoes. Birkerts chose “Indi’’ wallpaper by Trove “to create a sense of movement and beauty.’’

THE CHANDELIER

The antiqued-brass “Lumiere’’ chandelier by Jean de Merry (a longstanding favorite of the designer) reads simultaneously glam and organic and adds “an explosion of light and movement,’’ she said. The reflective treatment on the ceiling (high-gloss paint) intensifies the effect.

THE FLOORING

The Danskina “Lumina’’ carpet, made from a mix of wool felt and shiny, rope-like loops, looks and feels luxurious. “We tested whether high heels would get caught in it,’’ Birkerts said. “They did not, or rather not enough to change our minds about using it.’’

THE CLOSET

In a nod to 1930s glamour, the doors are padded and wrapped in metallic silver vinyl by Maharam.
