An offensive outburst by Josh Donaldson helped put struggling pitcher Marcus Stroman back in the winner’s circle.
Donaldson hit a grand slam and finished with five RBIs, Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer and the Blue Jays routed the Philadelphia Phillies, 11-3, at Toronto on Tuesday.
Kevin Pillar hit a leadoff blast in the second and Ezequiel Carerra drilled a two-run shot in the third as Toronto roughed up Phillies rookie Zach Eflin (0-1) to win for the 11th time in 14 meetings with Philadelphia.
Stroman (6-2) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings to win for the first time in four starts.
‘‘He looked like the old guy,’’ manager John Gibbons said. ‘‘It showed he’s back.’’
Stroman struck out six and got 11 of his 21 outs on ground balls.
‘‘He located his pitches down in the strike zone very well,’’ Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said.
Stroman had posted a 7.58 ERA in his previous five starts but held the Phillies scoreless until Jimmy Paredes hit an RBI double in the sixth.
‘‘I felt better,’’ Stroman said. ‘‘Not exactly where I want to be but looking forward to the next one.’’
Donaldson doubled and scored in the first, doubled home a run in the second, and hit his third career grand slam in the third.
It was the second grand slam of the season for Donaldson, who also hit one April 8 against Boston.
‘‘I was able to get some pitches to hit today and I took advantage,’’ Donaldson said.
Donaldson reached for a fourth time in the seventh when he walked and scored on Encarnacion’s homer off Colton Murray. For Encarnacion, the blast was his fourth in as many games.
Encarnacion’s two RBIs gave him a major league-best 56, one more than Boston’s David Ortiz.
Making his major league debut in place of injured right-hander Vince Velasquez, Eflin (0-1) allowed nine runs, eight earned, and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two.
The eight earned runs were the most allowed by a Phillies rookie since Gavin Floyd gave up eight against the Mets on April 19, 2005.
Still, Eflin said he had ‘‘the time of my life.’’
‘‘It still was a dream come true,’’ Eflin said. ‘‘I was out there in front of 50,000 people playing the game that I love.’’
Eflin began his outing by fanning Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista. He also struck out Encarnacion, the third batter he faced.
‘‘I was pretty excited after the first couple of hitters,’’ Mackanin said. ‘‘He looked like he was right on the money, but he just didn’t make quality pitches after that.’’
Philadelphia has lost five of six and 14 of 18.
Cesar Hernadez hit a solo homer off Stroman in the seventh.
Rockies 13, Yankees 10 — Colorado surged to a 12-3 lead behind a two-run homer by Trevor Story (2 for 4, 3 RBIs) and solo shots by Ryan Raburn and Carlos Gonzalez to stave off a furious seven-run rally by visiting New York in the top of the eighth as the teams combined for 30 hits.
Tigers 11, White Sox 8 — Justin Upton doubled, tripled and drove in four runs; J.D. Martinez had three of Detroit’s season-high seven doubles. It enabled the Tigers to hold on to a big lead after blowing a 7-0 advantage in a 12-inning loss against Chicago a night earlier.
Pirates 4, Mets 0 — Touted prospect Jameson Taillon took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning of his second major league start, dominating host New York and helping Pittsburgh snap a five-game losing streak.
Taillon fired eight innings of two-hit ball to outduel Mets All-Star Jacob deGrom after being recalled from Triple A Indianapolis when Pittsburgh put righthanded ace Gerrit Cole on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right triceps.
Rays 8, Mariners 7 — Evan Longoria hit a three-run homer off Nick Vincent, the highlight of a four-run outburst in the bottom of the seventh that rallied host Tampa Bay from a 7-4 deficit and made a winner of reliever Ryan Garton (1-0), who got the final two outs in the seventh for the victory.
Reds 3, Braves 1 — Jay Bruce had a three-run homer in the first and Brandon Finnegan pitched six strong innings, allowing one run and four hits with three walks as surging Cincinnati escaped a jam in the ninth to beat host Atlanta for its ninth win in its last 13 games.
Cubs 4, Nationals 3 — Albert Almora Jr. delivered with a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth that scored Addison Russell with the go-ahead run for visiting Chicago. Hector Rondon picked up the win in relief of starter John Lackey, who allowed two runs and four hits and struck out seven batters over six innings.
Astros 5, Cardinals 2 — Doug Fister pitched effectively into the eighth inning, allowing two runs and five hits and gave Houston breathing room with a two-run single against host St. Louis. Colby Rasmus hit his 150th career homer in his first game back in St. Louis since 2011.
Royals 3, Indians 2 — Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Bryan Shaw to rally host Kansas City from a two-run deficit. Whit Merrifield hit a solo homer in the bottom of the third for the Royals to tie it, 1-1, after Carlos Santana’s solo shot in the top of the inning.
