With 13 seconds left on the clock and a miraculous comeback within sight, Medfield boys’ lacrosse coach John Isaf called a timeout. Although the second-seeded Warriors had rallied from an 8-3 deficit against top-ranked Walpole in the Division 2 Central/East final at Ashland High, Medfield needed one more big play.
Sophomore Owen Murphy (three goals, three assists) found Michael Hauptmann (four goals) for a tying score with two seconds left in regulation that sent it into overtime, tied at 12 apiece. It set the stage for senior Jack Cahill (five goals) to net a game-winner moments later to complete a thrilling 13-12 comeback win.
Medfield (15-6) will continue its pursuit of a fourth straight state title when it faces Central/West champion Longmeadow (20-3) in a state semifinal Tuesday at Concord-Carlisle.
“You’ve got 15 seniors on this team that have been to three state championships in a row and they don’t give up,’’ Isaf said.
After falling behind early, 3-0, Walpole (19-2) responded with eight straight goals to take an 8-3 lead into the third quarter. Nine Rebels scored in a total team effort, but it wasn’t enough.
Led by Cahill, Murphy, and Hauptmann, the Warriors stormed back until the final horn.
“We’ve been dealing with adversity all year,’’ said Cahill. “We talk about digging deep and playing with heart every day and that’s what we did tonight.’’
Division 3 Central/East
Dover-Sherborn 18, Littleton 7 — The top-ranked Raiders — winners of four of the last five state titles — locked up a fifth consecutive Central/East sectional title with a convincing victory at Concord-Carlisle.
Dover-Sherborn (17-4) will meet three-time Central/West champion Grafton (21-2), a 14-5 winner over Nipmuc, in a state semifinal Tuesday in Concord.
“We just want it so bad,’’ said Raiders senior midfielder Jack Mahoney. “We’ve got good senior leadership and we’ve been there before.’’
“When we get into close games we just want to keep driving. We tell the younger guys to treat state tournament games like any other game, but bring that energy off the bus.’’
Littleton (18-3) put up an admirable fight in the program’s first sectional finals appearance.
Sophomore Daniel Angell (two goals, two assists) and senior Jared Collari (goal, three assists) starred scored early to make it a 6-4 game late in the first half, but that’s when the Raiders pulled away.
Mahoney (four goals, three assists) and junior midfielder Mike Mastrobouno (two goals, two assists) scored right before the break to give the Raiders an 8-4 lead at halftime. Then UNC-bound attack Bailey Laidman (five goals, three assists) took over in the second half, leading the Raiders to a 13-6 advantage after three quarters.
“We went to some different sets and when you have Bailey on the wing, the defense has to push out and that opens up lanes for other guys to score,’’ said Dover-Sherborn coach Brian McLaughlin. “When he’s hitting that shot [from 20 yards out], he’s tough to stop.’’
Senior goalie Ross Barnard made 16 19 saves and junior attack Jack Dillon added four goals for Dover-Sherborn.
Division 2 North
Beverly 7, Wakefield 6 — After losing to Wakefield, 18-8, a little more than three weeks ago, coach Jim LaSelva had a simple explanation for Beverly’s win in the Division 2 North title game. “We’re a different team now,’’ said LaSelva.
Beverly’s defense held Wakefield All-American Austin Collard to one goal after allowing him to score seven in the previous meeting. “We said if we held him to three goals we win,’’ said LaSelva.
After Wakefield cut the deficit to 5-4 on Anthony Forziati’s goal, Beverly got back-to-back goals by Nick DiLuiso, the last with 4:20 remaining to play.
Wakefield’s Braedan Langlois scored two goals to cut the margin to 7-6, but the Warriors weren’t able to get the tying goal past Beverly goalie Kevin Morency.
Girls
Division 2 South
Cohasset 16, Norwell 4 — The top-seeded Skippers got 11 combined goals from sisters Elle and Jane Hansen to pummel the Clippers at Walpole High for Cohasset’s first sectional title in program history.
Elle Hansen had a game-high six goals while Jane tallied five.
Cohasset will face Newburyport in the state semifinals Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Babson College.
“It’s the best feeling in the world,’’ said Elle Hansen, a junior captain.
The second half was more of the same. Elle delivered a free-position goal, then Jane, a sophomore, zigzagged her way to the right side and fired a laser past the Norwell goalie for one of her five goals. The Hansen sisters were simply too much for the Clippers to handle, and Cohasset’s defense was just as dominant.
“Going from a double overtime game when we first played Norwell to running time this game in the second half was crazy,’’ Elle Hansen said.

Needham 10, Notre Dame (Hingham) 9 — Protecting a one-goal lead in the final minute, the Needham girls’ team needed Liz Vallatini to close Saturday’s South final.
The senior goaltender made two colossal saves to preserve a signature win at Walpole High, sending Needham (21-3) to the state semifinals Tuesday at Babson, where the Rockets will play the winner of Sunday’s North final between Andover and Woburn.
The two late scoring bids — which came at the end of a three-minute possession — were on target, and would have resulted in a tie game. But Vallatini denied both shots.
“All year, both Liz and our defense have come up big,’’ Needham coach Beth O’Brien said. “Every time we’ve asked them for one more stop, they’ve given it to us. They literally held them.’’
Sophomore attack Maeve Barker poured in a game-high four goals.
The Rockets are accustomed to erupting offensively, but the Cougars (17-6) did well to keep them in check. It was Needham’s defense that was responsible for this win.
“They’re incredible,’’ Vallatini said. “They’re my wall. Anything that I think’s going to get past them just doesn’t.’’
Trevor Hass reported from Walpole, Nate Weitzer from Ashland and Concord, Bob Holmes from Concord.
