He is the kind of son who would make a father proud.

A freshman in college, he wrote to Globe Santa seeking holiday help “so that my adorable younger half siblings will have something special to look forward to.’’

“I am writing this letter on behalf of my father because his English is limited,’’ said the young man. “He is the most important person to me in this world and I am forever grateful for all the sacrifices he made to raise me and our family.’’

The young man said his half brother is 5. His half sister, 3.

“Shortly after my baby sister was born, my brother was diagnosed with autism at 18 months old. This took a toll on our family as you could imagine the stress and extra care and attention it takes to care for a child with disabilities.

“My father ended up losing his job as a cook’s assistant because he always puts his children first. He would never miss a doctor’s appointment for us and he would never miss a therapy session for my brother.

“After he was unemployed for almost a year, he finally found a job at a different restaurant. The great thing was that he was able to spend a lot of time taking care of the kids while he was unemployed, and I honestly believe that this is why my brother’s symptoms had improved so much.

“Last summer, my father and stepmother’s heart were once again broken into pieces when they received results from the Children’s Hospital that my sister also had autism.

“Sometimes, my dad blames himself and I can see the sadness and hopelessness in his eyes. But I try my best to show my appreciation for what a great father he’s been to all of us.

“Earlier in the year something else happened. My brother fell sick and it turned out that he had this kidney disorder called Nephrotic Syndrome. Due to this he was in the hospital for 2 weeks and out of school for 2 months.

“Needless to say, our father was there for him every single day. It seems like things always happen in our family but this is what makes us strong. It doesn’t get easier, but we do get better at dealing with it. We are a family that tries very hard to succeed and I am very proud and grateful for the family that I have.

“This Christmas, all I want is for my father to be happy and what makes him happy is when his children are happy and healthy. I’d like to thank the Globe Santa program for all that you guys do for helping my family out during the holidays. God Bless!’’

This young man can be sure that Globe Santa will provide presents for his half brother and half sister so that they, his father — indeed the whole family — can be happy on Christmas morning.

Globe Santa, a program of the Boston Globe Foundation, has been providing gifts for needy children every year since 1956. Last year, 35,570 children 12 and under in nearly 20,000 families had a happier Christmas due to the efforts of Globe Santa.
