In 2018 valedictorians, a sense of the American experience at its best

In the midst of our national disgrace of immigrant family separation, I was struck by the Sunday Globe Metro section page dedicated to the 2018 Boston Public Schools valedictorians. Forty-one valedictorians, more than 40 percent of whom were born outside the United States, in countries such as Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Uzbekistan, Kenya, and Somalia — many of the countries our president disparaged with an expletive.

They are bound for top-tier colleges and universities, such as the University of Massachusetts, Tufts, Bucknell, Wellesley, and my alma mater, Dartmouth.

Beyond the appalling immorality of our nation’s current stance on immigration, where is the “make America great again’’ logic in limiting or ending the influx of our best and brightest?

Had this president and his policies been in place 18 years ago, how many of these brilliant students would still be in far corners of the world, instead of contributing to the American experience?

Our future is in the hands of these great young adults and those who will follow in years to come. Or not.
