LOS ANGELES — Marcus Stroman threw six innings of one-hit, shutout ball and leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler sparked a 13-hit barrage by going 2 for 5 with two runs and a two-run homer in the third inning to lead the United States to an 8-0 victory over Puerto Rico in the championship game of the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday night at Dodgers Stadium.

Nolan Arenado went 2 for 5 with two runs and Andrew McCutcheon went 2 for 4 with one run scored and a pair of RBIs for Team USA, which knocked off two undefeated teams en route to the title.

The Americans allowed just three hits, and David Robertson closed it out in the ninth.

The US tipped Japan, which had not lost in the tournament, 2-1, Tuesday night, and stunned Puerto Rico, which was undefeated entering the game.

The WBC final has been played in the United States in each of its four editions, but the home team had never been able to play America’s pastime on what has become its biggest international stage — until Wednesday night.

The US only had reached the semifinals once before, in 2009.

Although manager Jim Leyland’s roster was missing Clayton Kershaw, Mike Trout and many other American superstars, the All-Star-laden group that decided to participate won two straight elimination games en route to the US’ first crown.
