REVERE — Firefighters from more than half-dozen cities battled a fast-moving blaze that destroyed the landmark Sozio appliance and furniture store on Route 60 late Saturday afternoon.

The five-alarm fire also caused appliances inside, and cars parked outside, to explode, officials said.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries but did not have to be taken to the hospital, Revere fire Chief Chris Bright said.

One firefighter called for help after he became disoriented, Bright said.

“It was tough setting up and maneuvering here,’’ he said at the scene. “It was a hazardous fire.’’

Crews arrived around 4:30 p.m. and found heavy smoke and flames inside the one-story building at 61 Squire Road, which is also Route 60. The building was a total loss, Bright said.

Firefighters from Boston, Chelsea, Cambridge, Lynn, Malden, Medford, Saugus, and Massport responded to the fire, which took several hours to bring under control. The cause remained under investigation Saturday night.

An investigator from the state fire marshal’s office was on the scene.

Revere firefighters were expected to remain on scene overnight to check for hotspots, Bright said.

The sight of thick, billowing smoke stunned residents of a nearbyneighborhood.

Luis Delrio said he first spotted smoke around 4:30 p.m. Within 10 minutes, the walls to the store “started breaking down,’’ he said.
