Jets QB Darnold a holdout at camp

Sam Darnold is officially a contract holdout. The Jets began their first practice of training camp on Friday without their prized rookie quarterback. Darnold was the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft and remains one of just two selections from the entire draft without a contract. The other is Bears linebacker Roquan Smith, the eighth pick. Meanwhile, Jets wide receiver ArDarius Stewart has been suspended by the NFL without pay for the first two games of the season for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances . . . The Falcons agreed to a five-year, $75 million contract extension with left tackle Jake Matthews . . . The Titans and tight end Delanie Walker agreed to a two-year extension, keeping him under contract through the 2020 season . . . The Cardinals signed safety Tre Boston to a one-year contract . . . The NFL and NFLPA met for a constructive meeting regarding the anthem policy and the social justice issues that have been the basis of some players’ protests.

Judge timetable ‘realistic’

Yankees manager Aaron Boone says it’s ‘‘pretty realistic’’ injured slugger Aaron Judge will be able to play in a game in three weeks. Boone made the assessment Friday, a day after Judge’s right wrist was fractured when he was hit by a pitch against Kansas City. Boone said he’s not sure if that timeframe means a minor league rehab game or a return to the Yankees’ lineup . . . The Braves acquired a familiar name to bolster their bullpen, acquiring Tampa Bay left­hander Jonny Venters in exchange for $250,000 in international signing bonus pool allocation. The 33-year-old Venters came up with the Braves and was a key member of the bullpen from three seasons, making the All-Star Game in 2011 . . . The Cubs made it official, acquiring veteran lefthander Cole Hamels from the Rangers for righthander Eddie Butler, minor league pitcher Rollie Lacy, and a player to be named . . . The NL East-leading Phillies acquired infielder Asdrubal Cabrera from the Mets for a pitching prospect.

Bradley cards 3 eagles

Keegan Bradley played the last four holes in 6 under, making two of his three eagles on the day, to pull within a shot of the lead in the RBC Canadian Open. Playing alongside leader Kevin Tway at Glen Abbey, Bradley closed birdie-eagle-birdie-eagle for a 9-under 63. “It turned kind of an average day out here into something really special,’’ Bradley said . . . Bryson DeChambeau reeled off four birdies in the last seven holes to shoot a 4-under 68 and remain top of the leaderboard after the second round of the European Open . . . Tiffany Joh shot a 4-under 67 to stay in front after the second round of the Ladies Scottish Open . . . Miguel Angel Jimenez and Stephen Ames shared the lead at 9 under when darkness ended play early in the second round of the Senior British Open at St. Andrews.

Tour de France

Thomas widens his lead

Geraint Thomas increased his hold on the yellow jersey in the final mountain stage of the Tour de France, while Sky teammate and four-time champion Chris Froome lost his spot on the podium. Slovenian rider Primoz Roglic won the 125-mile 19th leg through the Pyrenees with an attack on the dangerous descent from the Col d’Aubisque. A former ski jumper who rides for Team Lotto NL-Jumbo, Roglic finished 19 seconds ahead of Thomas, with Romain Bardet of France crossing third with the same time.

Victims’ payments halted

Michigan State University has halted payments from a $10 million fund it set up for counseling services for victims of now-imprisoned former sports doctor Larry Nassar amid concerns about possible fraudulent claims. The Lansing State Journal reported the school stopped making payments Wednesday after the Healing Assistance Fund administrator’s flagged the issue. MSU spokeswoman Emily Guerrant said stopping payments will allow an investigation into the issue. Guerrant says the fund had distributed more than $1.1 million as of June 30. Nassar worked for Michigan State and USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians. He is imprisoned for molesting athletes and possessing child pornography.

Miller breaks his silence

Former Olympic skier Bode Miller, a native of Easton, N.H., and his wife, Morgan Beck Miller, had their lives tragically altered in June when their 19-month-old daughter, Emeline, drowned in a neighbor’s swimming pool in the Orange County (Calif.) community of Coto de Caza. For the first time since their devastating loss, the couple addressed the tragic accident in a taped interview with NBC’s “Today’’, which will air on Monday . . . Katie Ledecky led all the way to win the 200-meter freestyle at the US national championships Thursday night, earning a second event to swim in Japan next month. Ledecky touched first in 1 minute, 54.60 seconds, second-fastest in the world this year behind her top time of 1:54.56 she swam in June . . . Alabama coach Nick Saban has received a new, eight-year deal worth at least $74 million . . . Clint Capela signed a five-year, $90 million extension with the Houston Rockets . . . John Isner advanced to the BB&T Atlanta Open semifinals for the ninth straight year, beating Germany’s Mischa Zverev.
