Phil Maia has called Lowell home since he moved to the United States from Portugal at age 12.
He ran track at Lowell High (Class of ’78) and UMass-Lowell (’82).
The past 34 seasons, Maia has directed the boys’ cross-country program — in addition to track and field — at Lowell High to unparalleled success, with a 260-39-2 dual meet record in cross-country, with 15 league titles, including this fall, and a trio of all-state titles.
Wednesday afternoon’s tri-meet at Shedd Park, a sweep against Merrimack Valley Conference foes Andover (a 15-48 win) and Methuen (19-42), was his final regular-season meet.
Behind a first-place finish from senior Anthony Rodriguez, who covered the 2.8-mile course in 14 minutes and 48 seconds, the Red Raiders captured five of the first six places. Maia’s 10-0 squad is a favorite to repeat as all-state champions next month.
He made public his decision to retire before the season.
“Knowing that it was my last year, I was in a position to enjoy my last season and take it all in,’’ said Maia, explaining his final season has felt like a “David Ortiz sendoff.’’ He’s received T-shirts and gifts from various teams and coaches this fall.
Lowell has its fair share of all-state runners, All-Americans and Olympic Trial-caliber athletes. But, as Maia explained, the highlights for him have not been the elite athletes.
“What goes through my head is not the kids that did well,’’ Maia said. “But the kids that struggled — the kids with odds stacked against them and still tried.’’
Maia will retire from Lowell High as both a teacher (Portugese/Spanish) and coach in June. He may pursue other work opportunities in the southern New Hampshire area.
But if this is his last season as a coach, he said 34 years as a mentor will suffice.
“I have some great memories of some great kids that will last a lifetime,’’ he said.
