Palladian windows stream in sunlight, give 1-bedroom condo a cozy treetop vibe

Clockwise from top: The living room of this third-floor condo in Brookline features a Palladian window and a fireplace; despite updates, the home still has the original stained-glass windows; the home, a Victorian, was built in 1925; the kitchen features stainless-steel appliances and white granite countertops; and the private deck off the living room.

As you walk up Winthrop Road, off Beacon Street in Brookline’s Washington Square, and the MBTA and traffic noise begins to die down, you eventually reach a home perched on its own little hill.

The exterior is very Victorian: stone pillars, bright colors (autumnal colors of green and light and dark russet), a turret, and steeply pitched rooflines. Keep the rooflines in the back of your head; they will come into play again later.

The home was converted into seven condos. The entrances are in the front and the back. When you walk through the back door, there’s a homey feel, thanks to a winding staircase with an intricate railing and the original stained-glass windows.

The unit featured here is on the uppermost floor of the home, the third. Enter through a small foyer. The bathroom, with its marble counters and tub/shower combo, is to the immediate left, followed by the living room. The kitchen is to the right. The bedroom is straight ahead.

This condo is far from cookie-cutter, and the ceilings are the first indication of that. The rooms are not simple boxes, but with their ceiling variations, reminders of the interesting rooflines.

The unit may be small in size, but two Palladian windows stream in natural light, giving it a treehouse vibe. There are hardwood floors throughout, except in the bathroom, which has tile.

The living room has one of the Palladian windows, crown molding, a window bench, a fireplace with a marble surround — and two features that should not be overlooked. The first is a small door to hidden storage space. The second is a short set of stairs that leads to a glass door that opens onto a private balcony.

The updated kitchen offers stainless-steel appliances, white granite countertops, and wood cabinetry. There is a hood above the stove, along with lighting under the cabinets. The in-unit washer and dryer are here behind a closet door.

In the single bedroom is the other Palladian window, with a seat that spans the length of the room. There’s a closet in the bedroom and another right outside in the hallway.

The unit comes with one off-street parking space and central air.
