TV Confessions: Novelist Jennifer Haigh
By Matthew Gilbert
Globe Staff

Haigh, who lives in Boston, just released her fifth novel, “Heat and Light.’’

Favorite show of all time, and why?

“The Wire.’’ Hands down, this is the best novel I’ve ever seen. If season four doesn’t break your heart, you don’t have one.

Favorite show right now, and why?

“Silicon Valley.’’ Mike Judge is better than anybody at writing about the world of work (his 1999 feature “Office Space’’ is an all-time favorite). Also: Kumail Nanjiani!

Favorite bad TV, and why?

“I Dream of Jeannie’’ aired from 1965 to 1970, just as the women’s movement was gaining steam. Interestingly, network TV responded with a popular sitcom about a handsome astronaut served by a beautiful, scantily clad handmaiden who obeys his commands and calls him “Master.’’ (Spoiler alert: The lucky girl eventually becomes his wife.)

What’s at the top of your Have-To-Watch list?

“The Americans.’’

Which show’s world would you want to live inside?

“Mad Men.’’ But, you know, only if I could be a dude.
