Navy ends search for missing R.I. sailor

The Navy on Friday announced it had called off the search for Petty Officer Christopher W. Clavin, 23, of Lincoln, R.I., who went overboard four days earlier while training on the USS Normandy. The guided missile-cruiser, based in Norfolk, was about 80 miles off the coast of Cherry Point, N.C., when Clavin fell into the water about 3 p.m. A man overboard call was made immediately. A team of Navy and Coast Guard personnel — including an aircraft carrier, four helicopters, and additional ships — searched for Clavin for more than 76 hours. The incident remains under investigation, the Navy said.

Conn. man’s body recovered from lake

The body of 33-year-old Michael Chace of Enfield, Conn., was recovered from a Southwick lake on Saturday morning, authorities said. A team of Massachusetts State Police divers recovered his body from the bottom of Middle Pond of Congamond Lake at about 10:30 a.m., according to State Police spokesman Dave Procopio. Chace had jumped from a boat into the water at about 3 p.m. Thursday and did not resurface. Divers had searched the lake Thursday evening and Friday. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Woman killed in rollover on Mass. Pike

One woman was killed and another was seriously injured Saturday morning after they were ejected from a Cadillac Escalade that crashed and rolled on the Massachusetts Turnpike, authorities said. Three people were in the vehicle when it veered left into the median then back to the road and flipped twice Saturday at 10:46 a.m. near mile marker 54 on the turnpike, Ludlow Fire Captain Scott Kozak said. The woman who was killed was 58 years old, he said. State Police identified the injured woman as a 66-year-old from Worcester and the driver was a 44-year-old man, also from Worcester. The crash remains under investigation, authorities said.

Family remembers slain teenager

Eighteen-year-old Bryce Finn, who was shot dead when he answered a knock at the door of his home last week, was remembered by his family Saturday in a statement released by the Essex district attorney’s office. “Bryce was a gentle giant, a sweet and kind child who loved and was dearly loved by his family, friends and all who knew him,’’ the statement said. “Bryce’s passing leaves an enormous hole in our hearts, our family, and our lives.’’ Finn was shot in the chest in his doorway Tuesday night, four days after he graduated from Haverhill High School. No arrests related to the incident have been made. His family asked anyone with information to contact Haverhill police.

Three-dog limit headed for approval

Residents may be allowed only three adult dogs in their households under an ordinance approved by the City Council. The ordinance passed Thursday seeks to regulate dog breeding in the city. It awaits Democratic Mayor Jorge Elorza’s signature. Elorza has said he plans to sign it. Under the ordinance, all dogs six months and older will have to be spayed or neutered unless their owner has secured a dog-breeding permit from the city’s animal control department. The limit is aimed at cracking down on people breeding dogs in unsafe conditions. (AP)

Naked driver arrested after crashes

Police have arrested a naked man after his car was involved in minor traffic accidents in West Hartford and Hartford. Police say the man fled the scene of a crash in West Hartford Friday afternoon before getting into another accident near a convenience store in Hartford. WVIT-TV reports the man, without clothes, climbed on top of his car, then entered the store, where he was subdued by police. (AP)
