Re “Underserved in transit, Mattapan wants a lift’’ (Metro, July 26): Community-based groups are working hard to bring transit equity to the neighborhood. The Fairmount Indigo Network is composed of 32 organizations and coalitions, including Mattapan United, that represent the interests of those who live and work in Boston’s Fairmount neighborhoods. It has been instrumental in driving improvements to the local transit system and beyond.

Thanks in part to the network’s advocacy, the MBTA just reaffirmed its commitment to building a station at Blue Hill Avenue and Cummins Highway, adding to the five stations refurbished or built between 2005 and 2013. This station could be a game-changer for the neighborhood, making South Station a 20-minute ride away and adding an additional transit option for reverse trips.

The network is advocating for the MBTA to run the Fairmount Indigo commuter rail line at subway service levels under the Indigo Line brand, and is studying and supporting methods of increasing ridership, including improved way-finding, equitable fares, and effective marketing strategies.

We are hopeful that through the efforts of the Fairmount Indigo Network and others, residents will soon have the same access to regular, reliable transit the rest of the city enjoys.
