MLK celebrations across the region

A sampling of events marking Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the south suburbs.

BROCKTON

The Brockton-area NAACP’s 31st annual Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast was scheduled to take place on Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Massasoit Community College’s conference center, with Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley as the guest speaker. COHASSET

Cohasset’s 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast will be held on Monday, Jan. 16, from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Parish Center. (See accompanying article.)

EASTON

The Children’s Museum in Easton welcomes children to a diversity celebration on Monday, Jan. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will include Martin Luther King Jr. learning activities, and attendees are encouraged to participate in a community art piece. Admission is $9 per person and free for museum members and children who are younger than 1 year old.

HANOVER

The South Shore Children’s Museum, located at Hanover Mall, holds its seventh annual Diversity Day on Monday, Jan. 16, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring performances of cultural dances and culturally themed arts, crafts, and activities throughout the day. The event is free and open to people all ages.

MILTON

The Milton Interfaith Clergy Association will sponsor the Town of Milton Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on Monday, Jan. 16, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Concord Baptist Church of Boston. The event’s theme is “Character and Leadership: Where do we go from here?’’ displayed through essays

and artwork by Milton students. The celebration is free to attend and open to all ages.

PLYMOUTH

The Zion Lutheran Church

was scheduled to host the third annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Saturday, Jan. 14, from 9

to 11:30 a.m. The event

is sponsored jointly by

the Plymouth No Place

for Hate Committee and

the Plymouth Area Interfaith Clergy Association.

RANDOLPH

The Town of Randolph and Randolph Public Schools will host a day of service starting with a free Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration program at the Randolph High School’s auditorium from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., on Monday, Jan. 16. After the program, volunteers will go to local schools to work on various projects such as library upkeep. Those who are interested in volunteering are asked to register by e-mail at fcr@randolph.k12.ma.us or by calling 781-961-6220 ext. 558, before the day of the event.
