Soldiers, sailors to recreate old ballgame
Sailors and soldiers will don flannel uniforms and play baseball by century-old rules to recreate the US Army versus Navy games from World War I. Navy Admiral William S. Sims organized a baseball league in Ireland in 1917, in part to foster collaboration among allies. The US Naval War College will recognize the centennial of America’s involvement in the war by planning Friday’s game in Newport, R.I. Organizers say it’s a way to teach people more about the war, mark the anniversary, and have a little fun. War college students will play seven innings in historically accurate uniforms. Spitballs are allowed. (AP)

Three rescued after fishing boat capsizes
Three people were rescued after a 23-foot fishing boat capsized on the east side of Baker’s Island around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. A private tow operator, TowBoatUS, heard a report of the capsize on a scanner and responded to the scene. The passengers suffered minor injuries, said Mike Goodridge, owner of the tow company. The passengers suffered minor injuries, Goodridge said. One passenger had a “bump on the head,’’ and another was entangled in ropes when TowBoatUS arrived. The passenger appeared to be “fine’’ once he was cut free, Goodridge said. “When you go in the water, the lines are floating everywhere,’’ he said. “He was probably kicking to get away, and got wrapped up.’’ The Salem harbormaster’s office was unable to be immediately reached for comment.

High school girls soccer team kneels for anthem
Protests by NFL players during the National Anthem have spilled onto a high school field of play in Maine, where members of a girls soccer team took a knee. One of the nine Traip Academy team members who kneeled in Kittery during the ‘‘The Star Spangled Banner’’ said they wanted to call for racial justice. They said they were inspired by the NFL demonstrations, which have been criticized by President Donald Trump. Team members were subjected to insults on social media after a photo appeared in the Portsmouth Herald. Some of the criticism was racist and misogynistic. Traip Principal John Drisko said he’s addressed the social media taunts. (AP)

I-93 border checkpoint 2nd one this month
For the second time in a month, the US Border Patrol agents have set up checkpoint on Interstate 93 in Woodstock, New Hampshire. The checkpoint began Tuesday. Police say it is running through Thursday. Woodstock is about 70 miles south of the Canadian border. Last month, agents arrested 25 people who didn’t have valid immigration status and seized marijuana and other drugs. Woodstock Police Chief Ryan Oleson tells the Concord Monitor the patrol had conducted the checks for decades, but before last month, there had been no checkpoints since 2012, due to budgetary constraints. Oleson said before 2012, the checkpoints came about once a year. (AP)
