Coast guard saves migrants lost at sea
TRIPOLI — The Libyan coast guard rescued at least 270 migrants off the country’s shores, bringing to over 450 the total number of migrants they have rescued in less than a week, the Navy said Saturday. The Arab and African migrants, who included women and children, got lost at sea in an area near the coastal towns of Garabulli and Zliten, east of the capital, Tripoli, were taken to a naval base and given medical assistance. Thousands gather for king’s funeral
BUCHAREST — Tens of thousands of Romanians joined European royals to pay their respects to King Michael, Romania’s last monarch, as he was given a state funeral Saturday. Michael, who ruled Romania twice before being forced to abdicate by the communists in 1947, died at age 96 in Switzerland on Dec. 5. Britain’s Prince Charles, Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, and Spain’s former King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia were among the mourners. (AP)

Boko Haram militants arrested
MAIDUGURI — Nigerian soldiers have arrested more than 400 people associated with the Boko Haram extremist group in a two-week air and ground operation, the military said. The militants and family members were found hiding on the islands of Lake Chad. It was the largest number of arrests of Boko Haram fighters in recent months in northeast Nigeria. The military said several insurgents were killed but gave no number. (AP)

President says rivals behind riots
TEGUCIGALPA — The Honduran government is accusing President Juan Orlando Hernandez’s political rivals of ordering gangs to block streets and undertake other acts of violence amid protests over the disputed Nov. 26 election. The government said Friday that ‘‘the gangs tried today to harm Hondurans, seizing roads with the desire to create chaos and a state of terror’’ on orders from opposition candidate Salvador Nasralla and ex-President Manuel Zelaya. New Gandhi at fore of opposition party
NEW DELHI — Rahul Gandhi, a member of India’s most famous political dynasty, took over Saturday as president of the main opposition Congress party, which has been losing power to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Hindu nationalists. Gandhi, 47, took the mantle from his mother, Sonia Gandhi, at a party function. (AP)
