Free agent Ian Desmond agreed to a one-year, $8 million contract with the Texas Rangers that will include a move to the outfield for the one-time All-Star shortstop who was expected to be in their camp Monday. The deal was near completion after Desmond passed his physical Sunday, according to a baseball official who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because there was no official announcement from the team. Desmond, 30, is expected to play left field for the Rangers; he has started only one of 927 career games in the outfield. Desmond won three Silver Slugger awards as a shortstop with the Washington Nationals, but last season hit just .233 with 19 homers and 62 RBIs and made an NL-high 27 errors. Texas will forfeit its first-round pick in the June amateur draft, No. 19 overall, because Desmond rejected a $15.8 million qualifying offer from the Nationals after last season . . . Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington acknowledged the team errantly computed Gerrit Cole’s salary offer for 2016, which led to a public spat with their ace. The Pirates initially offered Cole a $538,000 contract, which was a $7,000 increase over his base salary last year. According to Huntington, that was a franchise-record pay hike for a player with only two-plus years of big-league service time. However, Cole’s total earnings last season were $541,000 because he got a $10,000 bonus for making the NL All-Star team. Huntington said on Sunday the team ‘‘made a mistake.’’ . . . Davis plans to unretire
Former San Francisco 49ers right tackle Anthony Davis plans to file for reinstatement after he retired in June last year following a head injury, a person with direct knowledge of his decision told the AP. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because no move had been completed. Davis had always left open the possibility of making a comeback after sitting out a year to get healthy, and San Francisco still has his rights. The 11th overall pick in the 2010 draft was affected by a concussion late in the 2014 season. Last June, at age 25, Davis announced his retirement . . . Hampered by a fractured left knee, Lindsey Vonn managed to extend her overall World Cup lead by placing 13th in an Alpine combined event in Soldeu-El Tarter, Andorra, while Marie-Michele Gagnon of Canada took the win. Vonn’s main rival for the overall title, Lara Gut of Switzerland, straddled a gate in the slalom and didn’t finish, allowing Vonn to extend her lead to 28 points.
