Freshmen Gaby Diaz Martinez connected with fellow freshmen Kayla Demers to score the winning goal with only five minutes remaining to lift host St. Mary’s of Lynn to a 1-0 victory over Austin Prep Wednesday in girls’ soccer.

“Anytime we play [Austin Prep] or any team in the Catholic Central it is a battle,’’ St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley said.

It was a back and forth defensive battle throughout much of the match. At halftime Foley made the decision to put both freshmen up front to try and create a spark as the game still had yet to see a goal.

The spark wasn’t immediate but the move paid off in the end. Following a throw-in from the sideline, Diaz Martinez placed a beautiful ball to Demers who wouldn’t miss her strike.

“Both of us are very young teams,’’ said Foley, “a well-played game and win like this can go a long way.’’

Emily Stephenson, St. Mary’s (5-3) senior goalkeeper, kept the Spartans in the game, tallying 15 saves, including many shots from close range. Without her performance in net St. Mary’s might not have had the chance at victory.
