Patrick Brannigan
Patrick Francis Brannigan passed away peacefully Oct. 13.
He was a hero to his family and wide circle of friends. Patrick, the son of Irish immigrants, was born Aug. 4, 1920 in Detroit, Michigan. His mother, Honore Forde, journeyed from Galway, Ireland through Ellis Island, to settle in the US, where she married his father, Patrick Brannigan Sr., who hailed from Limerick and was a jockey and dog breeder.
Patrick lost his father, Patrick Sr., when he was 14, leaving him as the oldest child to become the family’s breadwinner. Patrick worked hard to help support his family throughout his remaining years of schooling, guiding his younger brother, John, and younger sisters, Rose and Elizabeth. Patrick went on to become a World War II vet who participated in two first day invasions (Philippines and Okinawa). Patrick later attended The Ohio State University on the GI Bill. Career pursuits lured him away just before earning his Bachelors degree in Commerce. Patrick found his passion as VP of Sales for General Clay Products, selling brick in Ohio and surrounding states for over 40 years.
He devoted his entire life to service of others. He loved people, and always had a smile on his face and a warm greeting for new acquaintances and his many existing friends. Patrick was a founding member of the local GYRO, Rawiga Country Club, and Cascade Capital Corporation. He served on the board of directors of Summa Wadsworth Rittman Hospital and several local banks. He was an advocate for veterans as a member of VFW and American Legion, and was an active member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. He had a positive, forward-looking outlook on life throughout all circumstances.
Patrick was married to his lovely wife, Joan Genevieve (Spetz) Brannigan, for 70 years. Together they bore seven children: Rick (deceased), Jim, Sheila (deceased), Tom, Peggy, Bonnie and Carol. Rick and Sheila have now greeted Patrick in Heaven along with Rags, his faithful canine companion. He is survived by his sons, Jim (Suzanne Kelly), Tom (Denice Jio), daughters Peggy (Steve Smith), Bonnie (Mark Sellers) and Carol (John Grande). Grandchildren: Delaney and Patrick Brannigan; Tierney, Brooke, Gable and Grant Brannigan; Emily, Eric and Genevieve Grande; Hannah, Polly and Patrick Sellers; Shannon and Brian Smith.
