Vasil’s bat, not arm, sparks BC High rout

BC High senior Mike Vasil is regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in June’s Major League Baseball Draft. But on Saturday afternoon, it was his bat that helped propel the second-ranked Eagles to a pivotal nonleague win over visiting Newton North, 13-6, at Monan Park.

In his first game action since leaving last Monday’s start with an injury to his pitching arm, Vasil made his mark as the designated hitter. The 6-foot-4-inch lefthanded hitter launched a mammoth double, drove in three runs, and scored three times as BC High rolled past the fifth-ranked Tigers.

“Today, my mind-set was to sit fastball and drive in as many guys and move them around,’’ Vasil said. “I think our bats are really coming alive and everything’s looking up.’’

Vasil said that he expects to be back on the mound sooner than people thought. He said he visited a doctor and there is no ligament damage, only muscle fatigue.

So for the time being, the Virginia commit’s impact comes as the cleanup hitter in a deep lineup for the Eagles (5-2).

“Now it’s time for me to be a better teammate to everyone because I’m on the bench more often,’’ Vasil said. “And at the plate really focusing on getting on base.’’

Complementing Vasil in the offensive onslaught was sophomore Pat Roche, who had three hits and five RBIs hitting out of the No. 7 hole. All three of his run-scoring hits came with two outs.

“I kind of had a bad batting practice,’’ Roche said. “So I just thought about simplifying things. I thought my approach was good and it felt good to come through today.’’

Added Vasil, “He’s a young stud. He’s been huge for us and he’s turned it around. He’s motivated me.’’

Righthander John MacDonald earned the win, allowing two hits while striking out four.

The Eagles supplied him with run support early and often. After loading the bases with nobody out in the top of the first, Vasil grounded a ball to second that scored a run. Another run came home on a throwing error. Later in the inning, Roche lined a two-out single up the middle off starter Kenny Schechter to make it 4-0, BC High.

In the second, Vasil extended the lead to 6-1 when he launched a double off the right-field wall that came inches from being a homer. Roche added an RBI double in the fifth to score Vasil and make it 7-2. Two more runs scored in the inning on an error.

“When they made mistakes we hit the ball,’’ BC High coach Norm Walsh said. “Early on we were really focused and that was key. We’re in a good spot right now.’’

In the sixth, Roche continued his torrid afternoon with a two-run double off the replica Green Monster in left. He scored on a single to give BC High a 12-2 lead.
