The Grid
Robert F. Bukaty/associated press

Many people have climbed a 4,000-foot peak or two in the White Mountains. Some have climbed all 48 of them — from Adams to Zealand and everything in between. But those hikers who have bagged each of those 48 peaks in each month of the year — that’s 48 peaks 12 times apiece, often in gruesome weather — are said to have completed the Grid. (For example, hiking Mount Eisenhower in January 1999, in February 2005, in March 2016, in April 2017, etc.) It’s a rare enough feat for a hiker to complete the Grid over the course of a lifetime. But consider the accomplishment of Sue Johnston, 51, of Vermont, who says she completed the Grid all in one year: all 48 peaks every single month of 2016.
