The Revolution narrowly missed the playoffs last season after a heartbreaking loss to the Fire in Chicago in the final weekend of the season. David Accam’s 80th-minute goal capped off a wild game which included a pair of red cards and chances aplenty.
On Saturday, the Revolution return to the Windy City looking to exact revenge against the Fire, who have had surprising success early in the 2017 season. It will be the first time this season New England (2-2-1) faces an Eastern Conference opponent.
“I don’t think we’ll prepare any differently,’’ said Revolution midfielder Scott Caldwell. “Definitely 3 points to us is kind of a double whammy in terms of the standings and the point totals. We’re going to go out there and try to get the best result.’’
The Revolution are unbeaten in their last three games following a 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo last weekend in Foxborough. The Revs had a pair of second-half strikes by strikers Kei Kamara and Juan Agudelo to earn the win.
Revolution defender Antonio Delamea comes into this weekend on the back of his second consecutive MLS Team of the Week nod. The Slovenia international ranks fourth in MLS with 33 clearances and has won 76 percent (13 for 17) pof his aerial duels.
Another solid performance last week came from midfielder Xavier Kouassi. The Ivorian played 90 minutes for the second game in a row for New England. After missing over a year due to a knee injury sustained in February 2016, Kouassi has finally regained his health and with it his impeccable form in the midfield.
“He’s been solid,’’ said Revolution defender Andrew Farrell. “He just had to get healthy and now that he’s coming into full strength, he’s great. He can break up plays and he can also spread the attack.’’
Chicago is fresh off an impressive win over Eastern Conference leader Columbus, 1-0. Nemanja Nikolic scored his team-leading second goal of the season midway through the first half to provide the difference. Nikolic, who came over to MLS from Polish Ekstraklasa club Legia Warsaw in the offseason, has been a sublime creative addition to the Fire attack.
Another recent signing for Chicago is German legend Bastian Schweinsteiger. The former German national team captain was acquired from Manchester United and scored his first goal just 17 minutes into his first game. His addition has sparked a new dimension to an already dynamic Chicago midfield alongside Juninho and Dax McCarty.
“Those three are one of the best [midfield units] in the league,’’ said New England coach Jay Heaps. “It’s very important for us to win our battles in midfield but also look for areas where we can put the game onto our terms and our strengths.’’
