Students, faculty, and staff at the Acton public schools campus on Charter Road were asked to stay indoors Wednesday morning after a bear was reported in the nearby woods, officials said.
The bear was seen around 8:30 a.m. near the campus on Charter Road, between Massachusetts Avenue and Hayward Avenue, said Karen Coll, assistant to the superintendent of Acton-Boxborough schools.
Acton police and the Massachusetts Environmental Police were called to search around the campus but soon determined the bear had left the area, Pat Hawthorne, an Acton police dispatcher, said.
Acton Deputy Police Chief Richard Burrows said several police officers saw the bear and one thought it might have been a cub and not fully grown. Police did not have any further details on the size or type of bear.
Burrows added that a bystander was able to take a picture of the bear running away.
Katie Gronendyke, spokeswoman for the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, said by the time Environmental Police had arrived, the bear had already disappeared into the woods.
Gronendyke said the animal has not been seen since it was spotted in the morning.
By late morning, the campus had returned to normal. Hawthorne said there was no threat to the school.
The large campus contains Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, RJ Grey Regional Junior High School, McCarthy-Towne Elementary School, and the district’s administrative building, Coll said.
It also has several athletic facilities, including baseball and softball fields, a football field, and track and soccer fields.
