Red Sox spring training report

SCORES: Red Sox (ss) 2, Tampa Bay 1; Twins 13, Red Sox (ss) 0

RECORD: 7-8-1

BREAKDOWN: At JetBlue Park, Chris Sale pitched four scoreless innings as the Red Sox beat the Rays. Sale and five relievers allowed only seven hits and struck out 12. The Sox scored their runs in the third inning, using three singles, a walk, and two stolen bases to get to Alex Cobb.

At Hammond Stadium, Henry Owens allowed six runs over 2⅓ innings. The Twins had 15 hits, eight for extra bases. Miguel Sano was 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs.

THUMBS UP: Mitch Moreland was 2 for 3 with a double against the Rays . . . Robby Scott worked a scoreless inning against Tampa Bay. The lefty has appeared in five games and worked five innings without giving up a run . . . Andrew Benintendi (.370) and Marco Hernandez (.357) had doubles against the Twins.

THUMBS DOWN: Owens now has a 15.95 ERA in four games. The Sox may soon be scrambling for capable starters to fill out their rotation in Triple A . . . Sandy Leon was 0 for 3 against Tampa Bay and is 1 for 11 so far.

MEDICAL REPORT: David Price started a throwing program, tossing some balls into a net while in the batting cage. His left elbow has so far recovered well from what initially looked like a serious injury.

AROUND THE BASES: It has been an eventful camp for first base coach Ruben Amaro Jr. He has coached third base as Brian Butterfield recovers from a knee replacement and on Saturday he managed the split-squad game against the Twins. “It was nice for John [Farrell] to give me the opportunity to do it,’’ Amaro said. “Unfortunately it wasn’t the best baseball game we could have played. But it was a good experience.’’ . . . Pablo Sandoval’s defense is markedly better. He started a double play against the Rays with a strong throw in the second inning and in the third he nabbed a hot shot off the bat of Rickie Weeks Jr. and threw him out.

NEXT GAME: The Red Sox play the Philadelphia Phillies at 1:07 p.m. on Sunday in Clearwater. Eduardo Rodriguez makes the start with Heath Hembree, Craig Kimbrel, and Robbie Ross Jr. scheduled to pitch in relief. The game will be on NESN and WEEI-AM (850).
