SCORE: Marlins 11, Red Sox 8

RECORD: 5-6

BREAKDOWN: The Marlins scored five times in the third inning to put the Red Sox in a 5-0 hole. Henry Owens walked the bases loaded and then surrendered a two-run double to Derek Dietrich. Owens was replaced by Jorge Marban, who gave up a first-pitch, three-run homer to Xavier Scruggs. Hanley Ramirez took Marlins reliever Alexi Ogando deep in the fourth for a solo homer. The Marlins tacked on with a run against Koji Uehara in the sixth. The Red Sox pulled within 6-3 in the seventh on a two-run homer by Chris Young. Travis Shaw’s three-run homer in the eighth left the Sox with an 8-6 deficit. The Marlins scored three in ninth, but Boston came back with two in the bottom of the inning, with Marco Hernandez doubling home a run.

THUMBS UP: Ramirez hit a solo homer over the imposter Monster and also made a nice play on a foul pop in the top of the fourth . . . Pablo Sandoval, batting righthanded, doubled in the second inning . . . Shaw raised his spring average to .538 and has a team-high eight RBIs . . . Craig Kimbrel and Junichi Tazawa each pitched a scoreless inning. Kimbrel was throwing in the high 90s.

THUMBS DOWN: Owens has a chance to start the season in the rotation, but he did not help his cause by allowing four runs on two hits and four walks in 2? innings. Owens, who threw 63 pitches, really struggled with fastball command . . . David Ortiz hit into two double plays, stranded four base runners in his first two at-bats, and went 0 for 3 . . . Bryce Brentz is 0 for 13 with 10 strikeouts this spring.

MEDICAL REPORT: Ryan Hanigan was scratched with a headache . . . John Farrell said Eduardo Rodriguez “had a good day [Friday] where the angle of the mound is being incorporated into his rehab, so we’re still targeting a day when he’s going to throw his first bullpen. It’s getting closer but we don’t have it exactly right now. What we can’t do is skip steps along the way. He’s got too much talent. Too bright of a future and we want to take every necessary step as we do with all pitchers in camp.’’ . . . Carson Smith has been bothered by back spasms. He threw off flat ground Saturday.

AROUND THE BASES: Marlins hitting coach Barry Bonds drew a lot of fans clamoring for his autograph, and he obliged. Bonds has become a fan favorite in Marlins camp and wherever he travels on the Grapefruit circuit . . . Sox first baseman Sam Travis had another hit and keeps impressing with his bat speed . . . The Marlins stole three bases . . . Young’s homer came off former Sox lefty Craig Breslow . . . It was 82 degrees at game time.

NEXT GAME: The Red Sox take on a split-squad Rays team Sunday in Port Charlotte. The game will air on NESN and WEEI-FM (93.7). Rick Porcello starts for the Sox, followed by Roenis Elias, Heath Hembree, Tommy Layne, Edwin Escobar, Sean O’Sullivan, and Williams Jerez. Erasmo Ramirez starts for the Rays.
