Thousands attend Karimov services

SAMARKAND — Islam Karimov, Uzbekistan’s authoritarian leader since 1989, was laid to rest Saturday in the ancient silk road city of Samarkand. The coffin of 78-year-old Karimov, whose death from a cerebral hemorrhage was announced Friday, was placed in Registan Square, where thousands of men — women were excluded — heard prayers and tributes. The body was taken to a necropolis for burial. (AP)

Emergency order follows bombing

DAVAO — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte declared a nationwide ‘‘state of lawlessness’’ Saturday after suspected Abu Sayyaf extremists detonated a bomb that killed 14 people and wounded about 70 in Davao, his hometown. Duterte said his declaration did not amount to an imposition of martial law. It allows troops to be deployed to back up the police in setting up checkpoints and increasing patrols, he said. (AP)

Islamist political leader put to death

DHAKA — Bangladesh on Saturday executed a top Islamist party leader convicted of war crimes involving the nation’s 1971 independence war against Pakistan. Mir Quasem Ali, a leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, was hanged at a jail near the capital, Dhaka. The Jamaat-e-Islami party protested Ali’s execution and called for an eight-hour general strike beginning Monday morning. (AP)

Ailing monarch suffers infection

BANGKOK — Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej has been treated for a severe infection, the royal palace said. The 88-year-old king, the world’s longest reigning monarch, was found to have a rapid heart beat and thick congestion, indicating an infection, the palace said in a statement. It did not elaborate. Bhumibol has been hospitalized for a large part of the past decade. (AP)
