The Revolution will look to keep their playoff hopes alive when they visit the Chicago Fire Sunday.
New England sits only 3 points out of playoff position and just 5 points out of fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The objective for the Revolution is simple: win their final two games. It would help their cause greatly if Montreal (currently in fourth) lost Sunday to Toronto before it comes to Foxborough a week later.
“We only can control what we can control,’’ said Revolution coach Jay Heaps, “which is stepping on the field and giving our best performance against Chicago. I think if we take care of our business and go about it the right way, we’ll have a good chance against Chicago and let everything play out as it should.’’
With 15 days since their last game, the Revolution will be well-rested and recovered from injury. Gershon Koffie, Jose Goncalves, and Je-Vaughn Watson are all available to return to the lineup.
New England last played Oct. 1 against Sporting Kansas City, scoring a pair of late goals to grab a 3-1 victory. Kei Kamara provided an early goal and an assist.
Chicago, meanwhile, is coming off a 2-2 draw with Columbus Thursday night. The Fire scored twice in a four-minute span of the second half — a Crew own goal and a Michael de Leeuw strike. But Columbus striker Adam Jahn, acquired from San Jose at the trade deadline, had two goals to split the points.
Chicago and New England last met in MLS competition July 23 at Gillette Stadium. After 85 minutes of scoreless soccer, Watson headed home a cross off a corner kick to give the Revolution the victory.
The teams met again Aug. 9 in a US Open Cup semifinal, with the Revolution earning a 3-1 victory. Kamara put New England ahead early on a penalty kick. Chicago tied it late in the half but Watson put the Revolution in front only 90 seconds later, heading a loose ball into the back of the net. Teal Bunbury iced the game late for New England.
“Both teams are different than when we played earlier in the summer,’’ said Heaps. “It’s a huge game for both teams and something that both teams are going to put everything into.’’
This match is crucial and could decide the fate of the Revolution’s season.
“We know what we’re going to do when we step out on the field Sunday,’’ said Heaps. “Be prepared to play one play at a time and try to get 3 points.’’
