The headline on your May 25 editorial, “NIMBYism shouldn’t stall Charlestown project,’’ is an insult to the people of Charlestown.
We are excited that a mixed-income development will benefit not only the present residents but future tenants as well. The bottom line is that the Charlestown community is in favor of providing better and safer living arrangements for the neighborhood’s current residents.
However, the Corcoran Jennison team initially proposed 3,200 units to be built to replace the 1,100 units the residents currently live in. The community reviewed the proposal and found it to be unacceptable. Charlestown is one square mile, with a population of 17,000. The One Charlestown project is estimated to add more than 6,000 residents.
The average density per square mile in Boston is 13,841 residents. Can you understand our concerns?
Jane Jacobs, author of “The Death and Life of Great American Cities,’’ provides an excellent blueprint regarding what makes a vibrant community. Her mantra is “neighborhood preservation.’’
We in Charlestown welcome new development that fits into our neighborhood, preserves our unique place in history, and improves our quality of life now and in the future.
We hope and trust that people will understand that Charlestown is a community that embraces diversity and respect for each other. We are not NIMBY people and do not deserve being labeled as such.
