An 80-year-old man was using a crosswalk on a busy thoroughfare in Allston Wednesday when he was fatally struck by a Jeep in a hit-and-run crash. Police quickly located the driver in Brighton, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 12:50 p.m. on Commonwealth Avenue near the Griggs Street MBTA station, according to Boston police, who did not identify the victim.

Commissioner William B. Evans told reporters at the scene that investigators determined the man was in a crosswalk when he was hit. He was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center.

Police swiftly broadcast the license plate number of the Jeep seen fleeing the intersection, Evans said.

The driver, Phocian Fitts, 23, of Brighton, was arrested by police. He is expected to be in Brighton District Court Thursday, facing charges of motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of an accident after causing death.
