The lesson: to reject appeals to our baser nature

Jeff Jacoby raises some real concerns about awareness and memory of the enormity of the evil of the Holocaust. But I wish he had said more about the practical application of “Never forget.’’ To me, it means being ever vigilant that we don’t repeat it in some other form, whether or not it’s of the same magnitude.

The Holocaust didn’t arise full-blown. It emerged from seeds of hatred. If we are to apply the lesson learned, it’s to reject appeals to our baser nature, whether condoning hatred, prejudice, scapegoating, or violence against “the other.’’

Respecting other people and their human rights should not be confused with the more superficial concept of political correctness.
