The homeowners loved the fresh, clean, and light appeal of their newly built home in Cataumet, on Cape Cod. Yet it needed a little flair, says interior designer Kate Maloney, who came on board to infuse the space with some of her signature style.
“The owners wanted the house to have a real beachy feel,’’ says Maloney. “We balanced that with different textures, fresh colors, and tailored elements.’’
Using the neutral toned walls as a blank canvas, Maloney incorporated color and depth through the furnishings without adding heavy weight to the rooms. “The nice light walls keep the space feeling fresh,’’ she says.
Just inside the front door, the eye is immediately drawn to the trio of handcrafted ceramic pendants that hang from the shiplap-clad ceiling above the dining table. The stunning fixtures were custom made by Heather Levine, a West Coast artisan Maloney discovered on Etsy.
“The pendants are one of the first impressions when you walk into the house. I thought they were a cool, funky way to add heart and soul, to inject a handcrafted New England vibe in to the room,’’ says Maloney. The dining table is made of rustic barn board with a metal inlay; chairs are from Crate & Barrel.
Rather than the typical “beachy blue tones’’ Maloney went for a sharper take on blue with the upholstered bed in the master bedroom. Handmade oars from canoe vendor Norquay hang above the bed. “The oars have a Capey feel but they are newer and crisper, more tailored,’’ says Maloney. A bench at the end of the bed is made of rustic wood that has a driftwood appeal. The room’s green flat weave rug, from Hudson in the South End, was budget-friendly and feels comfortable underfoot. “It’s not heavy and weighty, but soft and welcoming,’’ says Maloney. “Just right for a relaxed beach house.’’
In the family room, a lively green leather swivel chair is tucked in a corner by a window. “The chair is one of the shots of color we used throughout the home to balance the neutral shell,’’ says Maloney. A chocolate brown and ivory check rug by Dash & Albert grounds the space and is able to mask stains that might appear in the high traffic area. A vintage-inspired throw pillow emblazoned with “Beach’’ reminds that we are in an idyllic coastal haven.
