Nantucket rushed to a 9-2 finish last fall behind a dominant, physical offensive line.
The Whalers exhibited the same power run game in a commanding 41-0 win over host Bishop Stang on Saturday afternoon in Dartmouth.
Running behind seniors Nick Correia (6 feet 5 inches, 346 pounds) and Ampherny Garcia (6-1, 282), who controlled the point of attack, sophomore tailback Devonte Usher found the end zone four times, racking up 150 of his 182 all-purpose yards in the first half.
Usher scored on runs of 4 and 18 yards to go along with a 67-yard punt return for a TD and a 33-yard scoring catch.
On the game’s first series, Usher finished off an eight-play, 54-yard drive with his 4-yard score.
After a three-and-out from the Spartans, Nantucket sophomore Torane Burton took a toss on a reverse 15 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead with 3:06 left in the first quarter.
Stang again failed to generate a first down. On the ensuing punt, Usher ripped off a 67-yard return for a touchdown.
In the second quarter, Burton darted in from 6 yards out as Nantucket surged ahead, 27-0. On the last play of the first half, Usher hauled in a 33-yard scoring toss on the goal line from Jack Holdgate for a 34-0 lead.
The break did little to benefit Bishop Stang — an 18-yard sprint by Usher right up the middle with 5:20 left in the quarter extended the margin to 41-0.
Usher and Burton are skilled playmakers out of the backfield for the Whalers, showing great speed and field vision.
On just 14 carries, the backs combined for 139 yards and three touchdowns.
“They’re two especially gifted sophomores who have been playing the game of football since they were in third grade,’’ said Nantucket coach Brian Ryder. “It’s good to see them mature this year and really show off their athletic ability.’’
The Spartans’ best chance to score came late in the fourth quarter. A fourth-down pass to the end zone by junior quarterback Tim Manley was broken up, and the Whalers took over with 3:16 remaining.
Stang coach Dennis Golden praised Nantucket’s performance, while addressing the areas his team needs to improve in.
“We need to work on tackling, we need to work on executing on offense,’’ said Golden, the head coach at Catholic Memorial the past two seasons after a 10-year run at New Bedford High.
