It was only a matter of time before Hollywood made a movie about the 1978-79 point-shaving scheme that scandalized Boston College. Well, it’s happening.
Variety reports that Seth Gordon, whose credits include the upcoming “Baywatch’’ movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, will direct the movie based on a script by “30 Rock’’ co-showrunner Robert Carlock.
A few years ago, ESPN produced a documentary called “Playing for the Mob,’’ which told the story of how BC basketball players Jim Sweeney, Rick Kuhn, and Ernie Cobb got mixed up in notorious mobster Henry Hill’s ploy to manipulate the outcome of BC games in 1978 and ’79. The FBI eventually uncovered the scheme and members of Hill’s “Goodfellas’’ gang were convicted.
No word on whether the movie’s producers will seek to shoot on the BC campus. Our guess is the school won’t let them. When the documentary was released, BC wanted nothing to do with it, telling the Globe: “While this issue represents an unfortunate chapter in BC athletics, it occurred 35 years ago at a different time in our history. We are focused today on the present and future and not on the alleged actions of three individuals from the 1980 team.’’
