Globe erred in misleading readers over climate change critic

The Boston Globe damages its credibility with the publication of the March 27 letter by Patrick Moore (“10,000 years ago? That was climate change. Today? Not so much’’), under the large overline “An air of uncertainty over climate change.’’ Moore, with a history of taking positions that dismiss human-caused climate change, is given some credibility in the Globe with the tagline: “The writer is the former president of Greenpeace Canada.’’ This sentence is factually correct, but Moore hasn’t been associated with Greenpeace in more than 30 years.

This misleading reference would make one think that maybe Greenpeace is now not so sure of man-made climate change. If the Globe had done a little fact-checking, it would have found that Moore left Greenpeace over “differences in policy’’ in 1986.

What does Greenpeace say about its former official? In a statement on Greenpeace.org, it says that Moore “exploits long-gone ties with Greenpeace to sell himself as a speaker and pro-corporate spokesperson, usually taking positions that Greenpeace opposes.’’

Shame on the Globe for even publishing this letter as if this man was credible on climate science, and for suggesting that Greenpeace was supporting his comments.
