Lopsided losses by the Lincoln-Sudbury and Duxbury boys’ lacrosse teams are like solar eclipses — so rare the eyes have trouble acclimating, yet so improbable it’s impossible to look away and not overreact.
The past two years these two perennial powers have tangled, however, blowouts have ensued. No. 4 Duxbury (12-2) avenged a deflating road loss from a season ago to earn a statement 7-2 victory Saturday.
Brad Backlund and Matty Gill scored three goals apiece, while George Rovegno and goalie Teddy Griffin orchestrated a sterling defensive effort.
The second-ranked Warriors (8-4), who dispatched the Dragons 9-1 a season ago, were left wondering what had transpired as Duxbury celebrated a momentous win.
“I’ve been marking this date on my calendar for a while,’’ said Gill, a junior attacker.
“I’m so happy we got to beat them. We’ve had a couple tough ones against them the past few years, but we learned from it, and we’re ready to make a state championship run.’’
Duxbury coach Chris Sweet made sure to remind his players afterward that this was just one regular-season game, but he also let them have their fun. He knew they had earned it.
“They just played with a lot of energy,’’ Sweet said. “That’s what we needed to beat this team.’’
Backlund, a senior who missed all of last season due to a shoulder injury, moved from midfield to attack earlier this past week. He started the action with two goals, sending Duxbury into halftime with a 2-0 edge.
Gill helped the Dragons extend the margin to 5-2 after three, then Charlie Gans and Gill delivered in the fourth while the defense continued to dazzle.

Girls’ track
In her first race after a three-month hiatus due to a tibial stress reaction, Natick junior Grace Connolly made quite a splash in her return to the track for the MSTCA Girls’ Invitational in Sharon. The All-American won the 1-mile run in 4:53.90, shattering the 19-year-old meet record held by Shalane Flanagan (4:57.16).
“I glanced at the clock but not too much,’’ said Connolly, who finished nearly six seconds ahead of runner-up Kate Mitchell of Lynnfield (4:59.22). “I had someone right on me the entire time, so I was focused on just shaking her off.’’
“I really wasn’t trying to put pressure on myself, especially knowing that it was going to be a good field,’’ said Connolly. “It’s great to be back with the team and competing all together, so I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season with them.’’
Connolly, a junior, suffered a stress reaction to her tibia in February. She ended her indoor track season early in an attempt to avoid a full stress fracture.
Later in the day, Belmont’s Anoush Krafian won the 100-meter hurdles (15.31 seconds) and finished second in the high jump (5 feet 2 inches).
“Before the trials I was high jumping for about two hours and before the finals I was long jumping,’’ said Krafian, a senior. “To be able to lead the team and set an example is pretty important to me.’’
Coaches voted Krafian the meet’s top athlete and Springfield Central’s Kyra Hill the meet’s top runner. Hill, the only runner to finish in first place for multiple events, won the 100 (12.48 seconds) and 200 meters (25.74 seconds).
Sharon’s Shira Stoller was named the meet’s top field athlete. A senior, Stoller finished in first place in the javelin (134-10).
Boys’ track
Arlington’s Ryan Oosting edged Franklin’s Tyler Brogan with a winning time of 4:21.72 in the 1-mile run at the MSTCA Boys’ Invitational in Fall River.
Brogan finished runner-up in 4:23.98, while Wakefield’s Matt Greatorex was third (4:25.05).
“It was a little bit slower than I anticipated,’’ said Oosting, a junior who’s already qualified for the New Balance Nationals Outdoor event next month in North Carolina. “I just tried to turn it up the last 800.’’
Xaverian’s John Mariano dominated the 2-mile (9:34.29), as the junior finished first nearly nine seconds ahead of second-place Rohan Singhvi of Wakefield.
